My Australian Teacher has said:

To do well in the Listening test, you must clearly identify the main subject being discussed. This lesson will teach you how to effectively identify and 'lock on to' the main idea.

Lock onto - identify a target and follow it through. Your teacher may be using this to mean clearly focus on the main idea.

Another more common expression (at least in AmE) is "latch onto." One of its meanings is to be closely connected to someone or something, but it is also used figurartively to mean "to begin to understand."
