Locate

Hi,

I really appreciate the effort you're putting in to locate a home for me! And

I really appreciate the effort youre putting in to locating a home for me!

Are both natural and grammatically correct?

Thanks for caring!

Only the first is correct and natural. If you remove 'to' from the 2nd, it will also be acceptable.

What about:

I really appreciate the effort you're putting in to finding a home for me.

Why can't -ing be used?

Thanks for input!

I've mislead you, I guess, because your sentence has a peculiar problem. This may be open to discussion, but this is how I see it:

the effort you're putting in finding a home -- Put in is a phrasal verb, finding is the object gerund
the effort you're putting in to find a home-- Put in is a phrasal verb, to find is the object infinitiv
