Are both natural and grammatically correct?

Only the first is correct and natural. If you remove 'to' from the 2nd, it will also be acceptable.

What about:

I really appreciate the effort you're putting in to finding a home for me.

Why can't -ing be used?

I've mislead you, I guess, because your sentence has a peculiar problem. This may be open to discussion, but this is how I see it:

the effort you're putting in finding a home -- Put in is a phrasal verb, finding is the object gerund
the effort you're putting in to find a home-- Put in is a phrasal verb, to find is the object infinitiv
