Lo and behold

Hello,

Could you tell me please if it's possible to omit 'lo' in the following expression and if the meaning of 'lo and behold' and 'and then' are the same and can be used interchangeably in these sentences and not only in these sentences?

Eg.,

Lo and behold,/And then, I was lucky.

And then/lo and behold I realized, I was invisible.

Thanks

The two expressions are quite different. Offhand, I can't think of an example where they could be used interchangeably. "Lo and behold" is always a sort of expletive.

  • "Behold" may be, but it's also a common verb - albeit often a bit poetic.
  • As an aside, it would be a great help if you could ask one question at a time, or at least give each question its own sentence.

Yes, this is what I was asking about. I was also asking if Lo and behold and 'and then' could be used interchangeably.

I had to ask about both of them in this post as I had to find out if they have the same meanings.

There's nothing wrong with asking three or four related questions in the same post.

My objection was to your putting them all in the same sentence. It was not really clear what you were asking.

Clive's suggestion of "to my surprise" makes a good point.

"Lo and behold" carries a sense of wonder, surprise, and even amazement, which "and then" does not carry.
