Lo and behold

Hello,

Could you tell me please if it's possible to omit 'lo' in the following expression and if the meaning of 'lo and behold' and 'and then' are the same and can be used interchangeably in these sentences and not only in these sentences?

Eg.,

Lo and behold,/And then, I was lucky.

And then/lo and behold I realized, I was invisible.

Thanks
