Living with dogs
Hi. Happy New Year.
My question is not a language question, but it is more a social question.
I personally don't like dogs and I don't like to live with them.When I tell my friends that I cannot live with them because of their dogs, they get offended, and they consider it as an insult.
So I decided to tell white lie saying I am allergic to dogs.
My question is that, Which one do you personally recommend, the honest way or the white lie?
I would appreciate if you could express any other suggestions you might have.

I would just say that I never grew up around dogs, so I am very uncomfortable around them. Many Americans consider their dogs as part of their family. So, for these people who love their pets, saying that you don't like their dogs is a bit like saying you don't like their children.

I'm not that keen on dogs
The word "allergic" can be used in quite a vague way to mean that are you not keen on something (even if you don't have a medical condition). My dictionary defines it so - it can just mean you have averse feelings
So I would say that is an acceptable way of saying how you feel about dogs, whilst being polite
