I am in living in... sounds like it may be a temporary situation.

I live in... simply a fact that you live there.

They can be synonymous.

Well, yes, they are synonymous.

I live in England = statement of fact.
I am living in England at the moment but I might move next year = statement of fact but with additional information.

Sorry, I wasn't blaming the students for this! I have a feeling that there are rather a lot of English teachers who are either incorrectly teaching the use of the present continuous when it's not necessary, or are not correcting their students when they use it unnecessarily!

I am having problems with these lots of uses too, i never know when to use the preesent progressive or the present simple.

Often, the present simple is for things that happen repeatedly.

I watch this show every week.
She helps me do the dishes every night.
He opens the store every morning and his brother is in charge of closing it every evening.

The present progressive is for things happening right now.
I'm watching my favorite tv show -- can I call you back later?

These rules are the basic rules, there are more confusing and therefore i get confused really fast.
