Live/alive

How would you explain the difference between live and alive (when both are used as an adjective)

We would normally say

"We use live bait" but wouldn't use "alive" in that case

The only pattern I can see is that "live" seems to be used when modifying the nounwhereas "alive" seems to be used more with the linking verb. Can it really be that simple?
