Live on or in

Hello.

The following sentence is from a textbook.

He lived on the Kalahari.

Why is on used here?
What is the difference between live in and live on?
Thank you.

Well, I would probably have said 'in', but either seems possible here, since a desert is a very wide, flat place. We generally use 'in' for a location that we perceive as 3-dimensional and 'on' for a location that we perceive as 2-dimensional.
