Live / lives

Can I say,

Some live / lives in places such as the North or South poles while others live in hot areas of the tropical rainforests around the equater.

If I understood your point, you cannot say "lives". This would be used if there were only one person living there, but "some" often refers to a bigger quantity of people (than one). I'm not a native speaker, so don't quote me (Although if I understood you correctly, this should be right)
