live in the dark

Is "to live in the dark" an American Idiom? I couldn't find any reference of it.
Here is an exceprt of a TV transcript:

SAM How ya doing, Bernie?
BERNICE Not wild about people calling me Bernie.
SAM Sure. What should I call you?
BERNICE Bernice is fine.
SAM But how will you know I'm your buddy?
BERNICE I'm okay living in the dark on that.
Could anybody help me with this? what does this mean? I know it's a sort of joke, but could someone make this joker clear for me please? thanks.
