Live at large without a lick of work

Bob doesn't believe there are fellows that live it large without a lick of work, just doing this. I don't want to be too clever by half, but I can't imagine anyone that can be fooled by tricks so innocent. [or by so innocent tricks].

I think that fooled doesn't imply that something was done to him with malice, so I wanted to know if it's better to use maliciously fooled by-- or, for example, scammed by--.
