Little was or were

As far as I know the rule says that LITTLE goes with a singular form of a verb

Little was known about them.

However, I can see sometimes that it is also used with a plural form

Little were known about them.

"little were known about them" is a mistake (except in conditional sentences like "even if little were known about them..."). It should be "was".
