Little did we know how far

I saw the rough cut and loved it but little did we know how far this film would go.

Is it an inversion?
Is the reason the inversion occurred because you can emphasize 'little'?
And when such inversion occurs, the auxiliary verb 'did' is needed, right?
Thanks a lot.

Understand.

Is there no particular reason for the inversion here?
