Literate records

Is 'literate records' a natural and correct expression? Or, should it be 'interpretable records' or 'understandable records'? For example, "Compared to the Indus civilization, it is relatively easy to study Greenland Norse society because it is a European society with [ __________ ] records so that we can know a good deal about the people and their motivation", which one can be put in the brackets of this example sentence?
