Literary sciences

In my work as a translator I often come acroos the collocation literary sciences, mostly in titles of some academic bodies of non-English speaking countries. Could it possibly imply general philological studies and research, e.g. semiotics, etc.)? Or, more specifically, only literary criticism and related subjects?

It sems to imply study of any facets relating to literature and its origins/production. That will include semeiotics, philosophy, philology, grammar, history, theory, and criticism, not to mention research in to any or all. It is one of those terms that looks good, but one suspects contains little substance.
