Listing things in a sentence

Hi

I am trying to list a number of things a family had to go through in my writing.

I want to know how to list things (things the family had to go through) that are in different forms (either clauses or phrases) in a sentence and what kind of punctuations should be used .

Below is what I have provisionally settled for but i am sure it could use some correction.

As you can see, I used commas, semi-colons, colons indiscreetly without clear understanding of their usages.

It's my first time having to write in this kind of format, aside from the fact that English is not even my first language.

would apprciate any help I can get. The last part is a full blown sentence... wonder how it can fit in to the sentence as another thing...

"The whole family has gone through a lot: the violent behavior my first daughter displayed when the symptoms got worse and the arguments that followed between family members, unspoken reservations and doubts about whether or not she would be able to live socially in the future, the concern about her suicide attempts; wondering whether the it runs in the family and whether she could be protected when mom and dad were no longer there; would our second daughter feel burdened with the responsibility for her older sister she would have to bear when the parents were no longer there?"

Have a great day.

I want to know how to list things (things the family had to go through) that are in different forms (either clauses or phrases) in a sentence-- First, you need to convert them all to the same form, because that's how lists must be. I see that your first items (underlined) are in noun form, so I have converted your other items to noun form as well (underlined and bold). I have also adjusted and corrected (bold) where necessary.

  • Second, you cannot mix semicolons and commas between list items.
  • Use semicolons only if some or all of the individual items have internal commas.
