Listening and telling + is/are

Some groups of words are usually taken as a single item and therefore used in the singular (i.e. Hamburger and cola). What about something like "telling and listening" as in "Telling and listening toto stories is/are interesting."? It seems to me that this pair also constitutes that kind of singular idea.
