List of / Type of

Hello everyone Emotion: smile

Here is my question of the day: I have noticed that most of the time, the words "list" and "type" required "of" e.g. "a list of documents" rather than a "document list" or "this type of document" rather than "this document type". I was just wondering whether there was a particular reason for that. Are these time-honoured expressions?

Thanks for any help.
