Vocabulary

liquidating ?

Hi,
could you please explain what the word "liquidate" means in this context ?
"There are the many photos of Newman himself, and the photos of Pollock "in" his canvases that are perhaps as famous as the canvases; liquidating the figure from the painting just reinforced the figure of the painter as an anchor of authenticity and meaning."

Thanks in advance.

" Regarding your sentence, I think the word "liquidating" means something like removing , and I guess it can refer to the absence of the human figure in Newman's or Pollock's paintings which enhances the artistic effect of their presence in front of their paintings. In other words, the absence of the human figure in these artists' paintings makes you focus on the figure of the painter himself rather than the figure in the painting.

I read the original passage and I found this sentence, "How easily the human figure, what Newman and others worked so hard to banish from painting, walks right back into abstract art."
