linking verbs & action verbs

some linking verbs also are used as action verbs. e.g.
VERB=smell
Herman"smelled" the cake.(smell=Action verb)
The cake "smelled" good.(smell=linking verb)
as for as i think action verbs are not linking verbs.is the above statement write i read it somewhere.if not please give some good explanation.
And also tell me with examples how a Verb of Being (to be form) is a linking verb.
Besides i have one other question that every verb is linking verb as every verb links a subject and a subject complement in some way?
Kindly, answer me i shall be gratefull. i understand the questions are many but any help will be acknowleged.
