Linking Verbs

I am finding it more common to see verbs linked like this: meaning-making. I can't seem to figure out why this seems wrong. Can someone explain the grammar rules that either confirm my instinct that this is wrong or teach me what is right about this?

Thanks!

As far as I can tell with no more context, "meaning-making" appears to refer to the making (creation) of meaning. "meaning" in this case is a noun, not a verb. More context, such as some complete sentences to illustrate what you are referring to, would be useful.
