linking verb

if she were or if she was

Top answer

Please make the effort to ask a proper question: Which is correct, "If she were" or "If she was"? Some people, especially speakers of AmE and older speakers of most varieties of English, still maintain that only 'were' is correct, but many have no problem with 'was'. I'm a 'were' man.

Either one. It depends on the sentence. You probably want 'were'.

CJ is right. I should have added that 'were' is correct only in hypothetical conditions.
