Linking R

Hi there!

I'm a 19-year old, first years English teacher trainee from the .

Lately, I've been attending the so called 'singing lesson classes' (these are actually English pronunciation classes, there's no singing involved at all).

My teacher lets us, the students, just chat with him and each other just to find out where we could improve our English pronunciation. During this chitchatting, he pays attention to our flaws, and interrupts us to practise and improve our fluency and pronunciation.

The last couple of lessons, my teacher found out that I have a problem with the linking-r.

My r's sound more like a burr instead of a clean linking r. My linking r’s are too lengthened, so much that they sound pirate-ish. Instead of saying spurred (sp?Emotion: big smile) I add a nasty R between the ‘ 3’ and the d.

Therefore, my question is; how can I practise in a proper way, to adjust or maybe fix this problem properly? It would help me a lot if someone could help me out with this, because of my oral exam.

My first attempt didn’t go as well as I had expected, I failed on pronunciation, as well as on fluency. I find it quite hard to tell a proper story as long as I know that I am making mistakes. I know, for instance, that I’m quite a fluent speaker outside of class, a few classmates and I agreed on talking English to each other, outside of class, too.

Well, it would be great if you guys could give me some tips, so that I can practise, and pass my oral exam on my re-sit. I still have 4 chances to pass, but it’s always great to pass, and stop stressing about the resting chances.

Thanks in advance!
