Linguistic Question ???

Someone asked me this question, which I'm afraid is beyond me & hence wonder if anyone around could shed some light, in understanding the question itself & if possible the possible answer.

QUESTION:

Is it posible to use the concepts of Saussure to develop a thesis about a novel?
The novel in question is The Mistery of Edwin Drood by Dickens, the unexpected death of the author in 1870 left unfinished( in fact, exactly half done) at least temporarily, his first experience of detective fiction. Two years later, an American mechanic, Thomas P James, with little culture formation wrote in Brattleboro, Vermont in the US, the conclusion of the unfinished novel by automatic handwriting. According to him, the spirit Dickens was the author of the text. The purpose of this work is to explain the style, manner and ortograph between the two parts of the novel. If this topic is possible woul you please give any idea?

Hi, Are you asking whether one can use a linguistic comparison of the two parts of the completed novel to determine if Dickens' spirit wrote the second half? Well, people try this with Shakespeare, so why not with Dickens? Or perhaps I'm not understanding your question correctly?

  • One might also try to contact Dickens in a seance, so that one could simply ask him.

I don't see how Saussure comes into it at all.
There are all sorts of computer techniques to analyze the probability that two samples of writing were done by the same author, but I was not aware that Saussure's ideas had anything to do with this kind of research.

Hello,

I am new to this forum. I am interested in studying linguistics in college and thought this was a good sight to experiment first. I am unfammillar with the terms of this discusion.

What exactly is SP?(suassure)? It obviously seems like a literary device but I am not fammilliar with it. Im sure that once this term is defined I can participate in this

discussion.

Welcome to English Forums!

SP? What is that an abbreviation for?

Saussure is a person - a French linguist - not a literary device.
His most famous work is Course in General Linguistics, compiled from student notes after his death in 1913. It is available in many bookstores and on-line.
