Linguistcs suggestions

I am not a linguist, but would like to find a book that would give me a good overview on the origins and spread of languages.

I can suggest a good book that both summarizes and criticizes the major theories of linguistics. It's titled "Schools of Linguistics" by British linguist Geoffrey Sampson. It's an excellent read.

If you're interested in origins of lg, I'm afraid the recommended book is not exactly what
you are looking for. It is worth reading, though. What I recommend is
'Language: Its Nature, Development and Origin' by Otto Jespersen.
His books can sometimes be quite hard, especially for those who are not familiar with
linguistic terminology, but Jespersen is on of the most important
