line of sight technique

Hi. I am reading a text about different techniques of applying a coating on a material. In a table the author has listed the advantages and disadvantages of each technique. I cannot understand the meaning of the phrase, "line of sight technique" which appears in the column of disadvantages. Could you please help me with that? Thank you

Wildblue line of sight technique I suppose that term refers to the practice of applying a coating only where the applier—or the consumer—can see it. With this technique, of course, hidden surfaces remain untreated.
