Line From Homer's Odyssey

"There is Doulichion and Same, wooded Zakynthos, but my island lies low and away..., but a good nurse of men..."

This comes from Lattimore's translation, in book 9, around line 25.
What does "nurse of men" mean? I don't quite understand why, but I generally have trouble with the preposition "of" and how it functions.

Could someone help me in understanding what this phrase means, and what function "of" is serving in this particular case?

, but a good nurse of men. I understand that he is describing his island home as a nursery - a place which is a good habitat for people to live in, find food and be protected.
