But would 'as' be the proper grammatical form because an independent clause follows? Just curious.

"Like" sounds more natural to me, but I don't know if that's specific to my dialect.

I think "as" could precede an independent clause. To give a real example, there is a famous old soap opera in the states called "As the world turns."

Most usage notes that I have read in dictionaries consider it an old-fashioned rule to insist on 'as' to introduce a clause.
