Pls someone help me to understand the difference between the sentences below?

1.Like Haydn, Schubert wrote a great deal for the stage, but he is remembered principally for his chamber and concert-hall music.

like is a preposition so Like Haydn is a prepositional phrase and should modify the noun following it ..Similarly, as is a conjunction so As did Haydn is a subordinate clause thus an expansion of thought in a main clause and does not need to modify the noun following it..
