Like to do/ like doing

Hi everybody,

I would like to know which is the difference between:

I like to swim

I like swimming

and when I can use them.

Can you also give me some examples, please?

Like is one of those verbs that can be followed by either the infinitive or the gerund and usually there is no difference in meaning. There are grammarians who argue that one or the other is more common or preferable in some contexts but other grammarians say that there is no evidence to support that view. In your example, if one were to think of the activity as a hobby , the gerund would be the natural choice.

Both are fine. Personally, I prefer the gerund form after "like" - I like swimming.
