In the above saying, is like an adjective or a preposition?

Like mother, like daughter = As (is) the mother, so (is) the daughter. (Ezekiel 16:44).
OED gives the explanation of this phrase in the entry of adjective "like".
Is it so important to you whether "like" in this sort of proverbial use is an adjective or not?
