Like I play or played table tennis?

Hi. Please help. Which is correct? I feel both tenses are possible if the facts of the matter in both sentences are still valid and true, like "He told me we will get a raise in March" - and for this, the month of March hasn't come yet and the fact of getting a raise is still valid at the time of utterance.

1. He told me to live like I play/played table tennis.
2. He told me that I should live like I play/played table tennis.

I agree with your argument, but I think that the sentences should be treated differently: 1. He told me to live like I play table tennis. -- This one represents a parallel structure to the infinitive, 'to live'.
