like-alike-identical-same

Hi. I found an exercise in my book where I'm asked to choose the correct item. Could you tell me the difference between these 4 words: like- alike- identical- same The sentence is:

The twins are so ..... that I cannot tell them apart. I know I should use "alike", but I don't understand why "identical" isn't suitable. May you explain me that? Thank you.

identical is like unique - they either ARE identical, or they're not. Just like you can't be "so unique," you can't be "so identical."

"Like" isn't an adjective, it's a preposition.

"Alike" is an adjective.

"Identical" is an adjective, but it is "identical to".

"Same" is an djective, but it cannot be used without "the".

So, "alike" is the only possibility in this case.
