She heard a noise like a rabbit being killed by a predator.

if "being" was deleted as this, would it still sound natural and make the same sense?

That's right.

Now, let me ask the question from a grammatical point of view.

Is "being" a gerund or a present participle?
0
I'd say it's a present participle.

I see.

Just out of curiosity, what is the reason you've crossed out the possibility of being a gerund, may I ask?

It's how we form the passive.

The fox killed the rabbit. The rabbit was killed by the fox.
The fox was killing the rabbit. The rabbit was being killed by the fox.

We don't use a gerund to forum the passive. We use the correct form - in this case, the participle - of "to be."

Hi, Barb! Long time no see.

We don't use a gerund to forum the passive.
Are you sure? What about the underlined parts below? Do they sound wrong?

I knew for the first time the double pride of loving and being loved.
The man escaped being hurt in the car accident.

I would argue that "being loved" is the object of the preposition "of." It's not simply forming the passive as you have in your original statement.

In the second, it's the direct object of "escaped" and more ergative than passive.

Does it matter?

You said a gerund of the passive was not possible, but those are gerunds of the passive, aren't they?

Let me ask this way. Does "a sound like being smashed" sound wrong?

Plus, Barb, does this sound OK?

She heard a noise like a rabbit which was being killed by a predator.

My first thought was "how well does a rabbit being killed hear?"

What does "a sound being smashed" sound like? A sound like a window being smashed, perhaps, but we don't smash sounds.

OK. I understand.

Thank you very much, Barb! Hope to see you soon again!
