Lightning flashed/struck

For just then, lightning flashed and dark clouds began to fill the sky.

Hi,

Is it right and the same to say "lightning struck" rather than "lightning flashed" in the above? Thanks.

In my opinion the thunder struck, not the lightning. But the research on COCA shows that is correct.

We only use strike/struck when the lightening hits something, not when it just flashes in the sky. Once I was camping during a storm and the lightening struck a tree nearby.
