Light-responding

Hello,

Does "light responding" describe only the protein or both protein and retinal transplants?

Studies also involve a light-responding protein and retinal transplants.

Because of the singular "a" before "light-responding protein" I would assume it applies only to that, aside from the fact that I don't think retinal transplants would be described that way light.
