I read it in an English test. I think the pupil meant something like 'Life is like a box of chocolate. You never know what you get.'

Well, like I said, I've never heard the expression.
Personally, I find it difficult to equate a pony farm with the uncertainties of life.
However, it could be a saying from a culture I'm not familiar with.
