The late nineteenth century and early twentieth century have been noted for the “the tradition of the new,” for the conscious rejection or radical modification of old artistic forms. Discuss what you consider the most telling innovations, those that give a distinctive face to the creative arts of our time. Include specific examples from the art, literature, and music of this period. You may want to use non-Western contemporary examples to show contrast or influences. Obviously some of the selected works will need to be examined in great detail.
