'lie', 'lay'

As he lie there in wait, Joe was viciously ambushed. (Incorrect on every count, right?)


As he lay there in wait, Joe was viciously ambushed. (I say 'yes' to this one. It happened seconds ago [past tense].) You cannot use 'is' here, right?


As he lies there in wait, Joe is viciously ambushed. (???)

(You cannot use 'was' here, correct?)
