lewd

Question

Most of its synonyms are obvious in their etyma which makes it easier to understand like filthy, obscene... BUT I have never seen this word before or it's never come to my attention, can anyone give me some examples as to how to use them? Is it commonly used?

Hi,

'Lewd' is not a common word in speech. It sounds quite formal.

It seems to be used primarily in reference to speech, eg he made a lewd remark, he told a lewd joke. Maybe that's just because I don't seem to associate with people who actually perform lewd acts.

A very common term in everyday speech would be a dirty remark, a dirty joke.

Have you heard of the joke form called a limerick?

A bather whose clothing was strewed
By winds that left her quite nude,
Saw a man come along,
And unless we are wrong
You expected this line to be lewd.

I have heard of limerick before but never know what it is. Is the example you give me a complete limerick, where is the ending?
