level/even a score

Hello,
Which one sounds better: "His goal leveled/evened the score"? Is there any difference between them?

Top answer

I like "levelled or leveled" the score. To me they sound the same in meaning, but 'getting even' is a revenge attitude.

If you're talking about a sporting event, I think "his goal tied the score" would be most common. "Evened the score" is possible. I've never heard a tied score in a game referred to as "level" or "leveled."
