Letting him go

The doctors have told him they can't do any more for his father, so he's considering letting him go.

(his father is in a coma)

1) Would "letting him go" be natural to mean taking him off life support?

2) Would there be a more compassionate way to say it? Like "giving him peace" or something like that?
