Letting down tyres

He's the sort of man who would let down the tyres on your car just out of/from spite.

I've found the above sentence in a dictionary.

What is the meaning letting down the tyres?

My guess is you can meddle with the valve of the tyre and remove the air. I am not sure.

The spelling is "tire" in AmE and "tyre" in BrE, so the sentence looks to me like it's in British English.

The action itself is the same everywhere, as far as I know.
