Letter u as a vowel

hello

the letter 'u' is a vowel and with words beginning with a vowel, you use 'an' for example

an apple

an ice cream

an octopus

an umbrella

but for the words UNIVERSAL and UNIQUE why dont we use 'an' in front of it?
