Letter of motivation

My interest for applying to the Master’s in Finance are: (i) to learn the insights of international trade law applied to the real world, (ii) to become skilled at the necessary instruments to solve commercial conflicts at an international level; and (iii) to enhance my basic previous knowledge about financial matters, such as the role of the banking system in modern economies.

Being a Latin-American citizen has exposed me to the reality and needs of emerging markets of underdeveloped countries such as mine. Taking this into consideration is that I can say that studying abroad will allow me to learn not only new and relevant concepts about international trade law and finance but also will give me the opportunity to learn in a case to case basis how international financial markets work and how can I help my country to enter the international markets properly for the long run. These, in turn, will help my career and personal development, providing me with the opportunity to lead an improvement in my country’s commercial and financial system, which are clearly, as I stated before, underdeveloped.

As for my undergraduate degree I graduated from Economics from a recognized University in Argentina where I focused on international economics and macroeconomics. After my degree I extended my studies taking a short postgraduate course in Finance. However, I plan to follow the Finance specialization after completing the core courses of your program, since I need to gain the necessary knowledge in international finance, which I currently lack.

My ambitions for the future are related to becoming a leader in any company or institution I join, a source of inspiration to promote an efficient management. Since I started my working life, I had the chance to work for the xxxxx in relation to the financial aspects of setting the tariffs for the transportation of oil products, also for a regulated company in the financial sector and for the xxxxx, where I am currently employed. From this experience I learnt how finance knowledge is as useful in the public sector, in the private sector and in an international organization. It is through this kind of inter institutional experience that I realized that I needed to acquire additional knowledge, so I completed a Postgraduate course in Finance in 2007. I would like to further my studies in that area and complement it with international trade law.

In most Latin-American countries, a weak relationship between the banking system and the financial markets exists. In Argentina, there is also a weak enforcement of the law in commercial matters, so we have a history of imbalances in relation with private property rights and the institutions that are supposed to guaranty them. These are the fundamentals for any society to have its private sector develop and to be successful. Therefore, I want to focus on the effort needed to streamline the institutions and the companies to make sure that the entrepreneurial spirit is stimulated as a main contributor to development.

In conclusion, I believe that the education I can gain both in study and practice at the three Universities that I will attend as a part of this n Master will impart me with the tools I need for my future career in commercial and finance practice and academic research. Seeing Latin American become integrated both commercially and financially in pace with the international system is a goal, which I will seek to support both theoretically and practically in my future work. I hope that you will award me this opportunity to gain the necessary knowledge and skill I need for this mission. I am thrilled with the prospect of studying in Europe, a renowned centre of academic excellence, recognized for developing first world class leaders.

Yours faithfully,
