Letter of motivation for masters in CE

Can anyone review my letter of motivation and give feedback on whether my motivation is clear and coherent in this letter?

My early fascination for computer aided design and manufacturing inspired me to seek admission in xxxx University . In the final year, traffic congestion on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shahrah-e-Faisal played a major role in my daily commuting, be it morning lectures or afternoon industry visits. An attempt to find a possible solution to this perpetual issue introduced me to the field of computational sciences in engineering. I was thrilled to know that traffic flow could be modeled and optimized with partial differential equations in continuum mechanics. As I was already performing finite element analysis for my final year project, that was the moment I decided to pursue higher studies in computational engineering.

My decision to pursue Solid Mechanics and Dynamics as my preferred TAF is highly influenced by my desire to establish a career in design and simulation of complex mechanical systems. Courses from my undergraduate study, namely Engineering Mechanics, Engineering Dynamics, Mechanics of Materials and Numerical methods helped me in developing a sound foundation for this graduate programme. Because of my acute desire for CE, in the 6th semester, I studied the course Finite Element Analysis that exposed me to the fundamental concepts of modeling and simulation. Although complex in nature, calculation of global stiffness matrix for the entire spring system appealed to me and this fascination led me to scoring the highest grade in my FEA exam. Owing to my overall academic performance for that term, I was awarded scholarship for scoring a GPA of 3.56 and indeed, it validated my affinity for this branch of CE. Besides computing ODEs on Matlab, I enjoyed doing modeling and simulation on Solidworks and Ansys. This passion proved beneficial for me since much of my thesis work was based on it and more importantly, it helped me realize my professional goal. I believe my academic background, which includes various courses from Mathematics and Computer Science, makes me a suitable candidate for the higher learning opportunity provided by your university.

For my final year project titled: “Design and Simulation of Automated Systems for the Blanking process of Frame Body Panel of CG-125 Motorcycles”, I performed FEA on the load bearing parts of the designed model. The purpose of this structural analysis was to determine the Von Mises stresses against yield strengths for every sheet metal part. In doing so, I was able to test and enhance my acquired knowledge for this subject. This not only bolstered my skillset but also motivated me to pursue higher education focused on this subject. As an intern at xxxx, I was exposed to various engineering practices involved in the installation of wind turbines. While I performed well in the capacity assigned to me, I felt that structural flaws needed design improvements. This motivated me to become a self-starter in performing static and dynamic analyses of the wind turbine tower. Falling short of theoretical knowledge needed to perform the simulation, I was motivated to learn more about FEM in order to enact the changes I seek. Hence my desire to enroll in CE at xx as a masters student.

The multidisciplinary course content offered in CE is another factor that contributes to my motivation to study this programme. It is my firm belief that knowledge of high performance computing and advanced simulation techniques is indispensable for me to achieve my goals. A study program centered on the core modules of Introduction to FEM, Nonlinear Continuum Mechanics, Optimierung für Ingenieure and Programming Techniques for Supercomputers will definitely serve the purpose of achieving my personal and professional goals. The elective courses Advanced Simulation Technology and Computational Dynamics particularly interest me since these will enable me to possess a unique skillset needed to model physical phenomena in mechanical systems.

xxxx is one of Europe’s top universities due to its innovative research, multicultural environment and partnerships with leading institutes and industry partners. The fact that xxxx, being the pioneer in CE and offering an elite graduate program from 'Bavarian Graduate School of Computational Engineering' makes CE at xxxx a very distinct program. While going through the website of Chair of Applied mechanics, I found the research conducted by Prof. y and Prof. yy to be very enticing. The projects ‘Macroscopic modeling, simulation and optimization of selective beam melting process (C03)’ in Process Simulation and ‘Structural optimization of shape and topology using an embedding domain discretization technique’ in Structural Dynamics highly motivate me to study at this university. The exposure I would get by working under the supervision of such distinguished professors will be invaluable for my Thesis and subsequent professional life. Moreover, my German language skills will enable me to study courses and research publications in the native language. This will be a whole lot unique experience and I, for one, certainly look forward to it.

As an industrial engineer my prime objective lies in the optimization of complex mechanical systems. xxxx provides the framework to complement my knowledge pertinent to my personal, professional and academic goals. I am confident that my knowledge, practical experience and motivation qualifies my decision to study this programme. I see this opportunity to study Computational Engineering at xxxx a step forward in my life and I find myself to be enthusiastic to take on this exciting opportunity.
