program at Zentralinstitut El Gouna of Technische Universität Berlin starting in October 2017. I graduated in July 2012 with a degree Bachelor of Architecture Engineering as one of the top 15 students in my department.
Earlier , I successfully completed my high school and got the fifth highest mark over school with total percentage of (94,6% = 1.32 GPA).
Architecture has been a new experience to me. But all my uncles are engineers specialized in different sectors ( civil, electrical and naval ) engineers .since I was 10 they noticed that I had special interests in Painting and different coloring techniques. I spent my summer vacations in drawing and making crafts . They provided me with cubes and Lego, I connected them to make different formations. These started off with making simple models. My family encouraged me to study architecture. Architecture gave me the subjects of these models, rising from those blocks to new conceptualized designs.
It was from my third year of Architectural study that I began to have an approach to design process. The third year design topic was to design a residential neighborhood on a real existing site. Including all facilities and services (educational, medical, sports and commercial) regarding land value, layout and topographical features .This would be achieved by carefully observing the site. These features would in turn explore the various design solutions that only add to the process of achieving the best solution .
In my first critical exposure to Urban Planning and Design, as a student of the fourth year of Architecture, I got the chance to work on the analysis of urban space which was "El_Moez st , in old Cairo". This street has a historical background the thesis involved with a detailed analysis of various urban dimensions for the street (morphology, perceptual, social and visual). Besides, as a part of a team we designed a themed Urban park with a full site analysis using 3d visualization. We successfully completed our task and received good comments from our supervisor.
After my graduation in 2012, I got an internship in Design way architecture office. I learned designing and project planning. I had the opportunity to see the whole designing process of different projects and the factors which control it. After working with such projects, now I realize that in order to build higher skill and to learn new technologies in this field, higher studies in the field of urban planning in reputed International Institution is very essential.
In the same period I volunteered for community development association , I had the opportunity to help needy children and poor families. Also I gained a good experience in communication, problem solving, adaptability and the ability to plan and prioritize work.
I desire learning at TU Berlin as one of the most prestigious education institutions in Europe which was founded 138 years ago. It has one of the highest proportions of international students in Germany, almost 20 % were enrolled in 2016. Also studying in of the one of the top 100 universities worldwide and one of the top 50 in the field of Engineering & Technology. I know that I will gain valuable experience and comprehensive knowledge. Consequently, TU Berlin is the best environment for me to exert myself and achieve my goals.
During my daily life observation, I can see that my country Egypt faces many challenges such as the growth of informal settlements lacking services ( Education, health and infrastructure) which impact the quality of life of residences. Urban development now is a crucial need and should be guided by sustainable planning with protection of historical, cultural and environmental resources.
My career objective is to gain experience in urban planning strategies . And involve with international organizations and institutes to improve people's life. Also I'll have the opportunity to observe different techniques and strategies to support my home country development and reshape urban planning during a time of a rapid economic and political change. One day , I'll run my own Consulting firm in the field of architecture, urban & regional planning,
I am applying after viewing the course curriculum provided by University. As the research focus and facilities available in your department complement my research interests and requirements, I believe that being a part of your department would not only enrich my career, but would also help me to exhibit my maximum potentials. I further feel that as a Masters student at your University.
Sincerely,
Nehal Hassan
