Letter Writing

letter of motivation

Hello there, my name is Christoph and I am from Germany. I am applying for a Bachelors Program at a foreign university. Therefore I need to write a letter of motivation.
I would be very grateful if a native speaker could go through it and give me some advice.
Thank you very much in advance!

Dear ladies and gentlemen,
I am writing to apply for the International Bachelor in Psychology in the ** University.

My passion for psychology was ignited in middle school when I was voted as class representative and had to do a lot of mediation work. To increase my respective skills I read books about body language and quickly I realized how decisively a basic psychological understanding would help in terms of solving conflicts. In the following years I inquired further through books and conversations, eager to find what determines peoples’ mindsets. In grade eleven, I chose to write my scientific paper about “interpersonal relationships”.

After my graduation I volunteered as an English teacher in a rural area of China for one year. There I learned to speak in front of classes with about 60 people and begun my studies of Chinese. Most of all however, I encountered the view on global problems from the perspective of a developing country. Especially inclined I became to the question why a vast majority of earths’ population seems to suffer from globalization while only a minority is profiting - during an age which accumulates more technology and knowledge that ever before.

Driven by the question how I could connect my desire to solve that problem with my passion of psychology I interned first in a psychiatric clinic for six weeks and afterwards in a non-governmental organization for two months. I came to the conclusion that providing political and economic stakeholders with a profound psychological expertise would be the greatest contribution I could make to sustain earth and society.

I am applying for the International Bachelor of Psychology in the ** University because the Problem-Based Learning teaches a combination of skills I regard as essential to reach my goals. Though I am very interested in a thorough understanding of psychological theories, I expect to encounter a lot of psychological problems during my work which will be new to me since I do aim for a career in the steadily changing fields of policy and economics. Rather than to be limited to a fixed amount of theories I embrace to learn the ability of creating own ideas so that I can provide tailor-made solutions for new problems.

Similarly indispensable, I consider the international environment because experience gained abroad tend to have a very own intensity and the company of international fellows was always of great inspiration to me. I am looking forward to widen my horizon by dealing with a lot of very different points of view. Furthermore, I hope to build friendships with people who have similar intentions like me in later life. Besides that, an international environment combined with the exchange programs of **University bears the optimal conditions to set food in the realm of international work.
