I am writing to apply for the program 'ABC' and confident that this is an excellent program which best meets my goals and aspirations for furthering my education.
After studying Chemical Engineering as an undergraduate course for 4 years at ABC, I have been working as Health Safety & Environment (HSE) Officer at ABC for 8 months, carrying out day-to-day operations of HSE department and contributing to effective HSE management by providing technical support. As this is start of my professional career and I found HSE as a growth oriented and very challenging career opportunity, integrating and optimizing systems for efficient operations while ensuring no harm to personnel, material and environment. As fire safety is the major domain under HSE, and relatively more related to my undergraduate major engineering subjects such as fuels and combustion, heat transfer, thermodynamics, mass transfer, chemical reaction engineering, transport phenomena and applied chemistry, I am sure that a postgraduate degree in fire safety engineering would be a valuable asset for me. I have developed very sound understanding and showed excellent academic performance in these subjects.
At ABC I have been involved in different activities related to fire safety i.e employee training and awareness, risk assessment and preventive actions, incident investigation and root cause analysis, ensure availability and operability of FFEs. The internship in NOVATEX Ltd Pakistan in April 2014 was a great learning experience for me when I had the opportunity to learn about the process of manufacturing bottle and film grade resin and advanced fire safety systems at a process plant. My undergraduate final year project “Process Design for Production of Gasoline by Platforming of Naphtha” also included Hazard & Operability Study (HAZOP), systematically examining the proposed process for identification and prevention of hazards. This project was my first foray into research work, which was a great experience and it improved my research capability and design study knowledge.
I am determined to make most out of this program. By availing this excellent opportunity, my aim is to become an FSE expert in an international framework. On the XYZ website I have read that this program offers mobility scheme at three partner universities in Europe and an industrial internship opportunity after first year, which would be a unique experience for me. In addition to general technical courses offered by this program, I am also interested in the course “Introduction to Entrepreneurship”, which would be a powerful tool, having the capacity of the utilization of technical knowledge in development of new business ideas. I believe that studying at these reputed international universities would enhance my academic and professional growth and multicultural exposure would be a great contribution to personal development.
I believe that extra-curricular activities and sports are integral part of personal development. I was an active member of English Literary Society at the university, which provided me the framework to improve my English language and communication skills. I also have been an active sportsman, like to play cricket, basketball and table tennis, represented chemical engineering department many times in inter departmental sports competitions at university. In addition to physical fitness and excitement, these sports have improved my team playing and strategic capabilities.
Besides my interest in this program, I want to mention some cogent statistics. Fire incidents kill around 16,500 people and leave 164,000 injured or disabled every year in Pakistan. For example, a very shocking fire in a garment factory in Baldia town in 2012 killed more than 250 people. The most common reasons for catastrophes by fire incidents of this type in Pakistan are negligence of the management, non-availability of fire safety equipment, insufficient exits and ventilation and lack of proper staff training. Thus, your postgraduate program in this vital area, which is often neglected in developing countries like Pakistan, is a valued one.
I am confident that being a part of this program would not only empower my career development, but would give me the framework to utilize my full potentials and I would benefit from the numerous challenging career opportunities.
