Letter Writing

Letter of Motivation.

Below is my in-progress letter of motivation. Any advice would be much appreciated. It is to study in Sweden on a Design Masters Program.

Dear Sir or Madam:

I am writing to apply for a place on your Masters Program in Integrated Product Design starting in September 2015. My career ambition is to become a freelance designer consulting with internationally recognized and successful companies at the forefront of radical and innovative product development.

In June this year I will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Product Design from the University of Bournemouth, England. I anticipate this will be with a First Class Honours, based on consistent performance above 70% in previous years of study. I rank among the top 5 students on my course, though am driven to exceed my peers and achieve the highest grade possible with the time I have left. I have an exemplary educational background including (amongst others) 4 A-Levels and 11 GCSES at grade A or above. I am now hoping to further my knowledge and amplify my skillset as a student at your facility.

We have all for the entirety of our lives been exposed to design, from the exceptional: Dyson, Apple, Mercedes (to name just a few) to the very weak. What has captured my attention, even from a young age, is how a single product can improve the lives of millions; the work of one designer, a single vision, can be the driving force behind radical global change. This has been the inspiration for all my achievements to date, and is the grounding of my intellectual motivation to solve problems through innovation.

I am fortunate enough to have worked on many varied and successful projects across multiple disciplines. Most recently I have worked within peadiatric prosthesis with the focus on increasing accessibility in the developing world. My work has been recognized by several charities and has served as an important milestone in my career so far. Driven by my underlying motivation of making positive changes, this project specifically has taught me compassion and the importance of gaining a thorough understanding of your user.

I would like to continue my studies as a platform to continue developing these skills amongst others and as a chance to work collaboratively with like-minded individuals with the aim of pushing each other to achieve at the highest level. The program offered by your University will give me the opportunity to explore my own design curiosities and learn from experts in an environment that encourages creativity. It is this attitude to personal development that has drawn me to KTH from the extensive Universities and Masters Degrees available worldwide.

Complimenting my academic performance I have a commitment to excellence and an eye for detail developed through experience in the Super Yacht industry and through Freelance work for companies including Multi-national Investment Firms. The standard and required professionalism at this level has taught me to remain focused and to meet fast deadlines without error. This background makes me confident that I can offer a passion and dynamicity to the program and thus exceed your expectations of me as a student.

My thirst for knowledge is not yet exhausted and I hope that you will allow me to bring my unique viewpoint to KTH and demonstrate to you my ability to thrive in new environments and enrich the program by adding diversity through my international background and interdisciplinary education.

Sincerely yours,
